Bobby Jones completes the Grand Slam

Jones won the British Amateur, The Open, the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur in the same year. His victory at Merion completed a sweep unlike any other in golf, and he retired from competitive golf soon afterward.

Jones began in Britain, winning the Amateur Championship and The Open. He came home and added the U.S. Open before arriving at Merion for the last leg, the U.S. Amateur.

The pressure increased with every win because the sweep had no precedent. At Merion he finished the fourth title, then retired from top-level competition. The Grand Slam remains a feat defined by the championships of his own era.
