The first Women’s Amateur
Lady Margaret Scott won the inaugural Women’s Amateur Championship, then retained the title in 1894 and 1895. Her early dominance gave the new competition a star and a lasting benchmark.
The inaugural championship was held at Royal Lytham & St Annes. Scott's three successive wins immediately established a standard for a competition that gave elite women golfers an enduring championship stage.
Scott's victories belong at the start of a larger story about access. Formal championships created public records that let later players measure themselves against earlier champions.
