The trophy that became golf's most recognizable prize.
After Young Tom Morris won the Challenge Belt outright in 1870, organizers commissioned a new trophy. It was not ready for the 1872 championship. Tom Kidd became the first champion to receive the Claret Jug in 1873, while Morris's name was engraved first for his 1872 win.
Young Tom Morris won three consecutive Opens through 1870 and kept the Challenge Belt under its terms. With no trophy ready for a new winner, The Open skipped 1871. Organizers then commissioned a silver jug.
The new trophy was not finished in time for the 1872 Open, which Young Tom also won. Tom Kidd became the first champion physically presented with the Claret Jug in 1873, although Young Tom's name was engraved first for 1872.
