Turnberry's Ailsa Course has survived wartime use and repeated reinvention. The Duel in the Sun between Watson and Nicklaus in 1977 fixed its coastal holes in golf memory.
The Ailsa has been rebuilt and refined, so its present form is a chapter in an ongoing history. Turnberry's view of the lighthouse remains one of The Open's defining images.
